Patternhack: Britt camisole

Pattern hack: Britt camisole

A quick and easy pattern hack is turning the Britt dungarees into a camisole with a square or a V-shaped neckline.

1. Hold the front pattern piece in front of your body. The strap of the pattern should be 10-15 cm above your shoulder to make room for the knot. Make sure to center the bra strap underneath the pattern strap. Decide the finished length of the camisole (A). Measure from the center of the strap to the center of your chest (B). Measure from the armhole of the pattern to the top edge of the bra (C), to keep the bra from peeking out from the camisole.

2. Trace the front pattern piece on a sheet of pattern paper. Mark the length on the sheet (A). Measure from the center of the strap and mark the center front (B). Add the measurements from the armhole to the bra (C) to make a higher armhole.

Draw the outline of the camisole, based on your measurements. Use a ruler to make the line at center front and the side line completely straight. All corners should be at a 90 degree angle to avoid drooping side seams and to keep the top and bottom edge as a straight line when you cut on fold.

This pattern piece is both front and back of the camisole. Cut both pieces on fold and make a facing the same length as the dungaree pattern facing. Follow the sewing instructions of the dungarees as much as possible when you sew.

For a V-neck, measure how low you want the cut and draw a diagonal line at the center front.

Pattern change: Britt singlet

A quick and easy pattern change from Britt suspender trousers to a singlet with ties at the shoulders and a square or V-shaped neck.

1. Hold the front piece of the pattern in front of your body. The strap on the pattern should stop 10-15 cm above the shoulder, to make room for tying. Make sure the bra stop is centered under the strap on the pattern. Measure how long you want the singlet to be (A). Measure from the center of the bra strap to the center of your chest (B). Measure from the armhole on the pattern to the edge at the top of the bra (C), so that the bra does not show under the singlet.

2. Draw the front piece of the suspender pants on a pattern sheet. Draw in the length of the pattern (A). Draw in the measurement from the center of the strap to the center of the chest (B). This will be the line in the middle of the front. Draw in the mark above the armhole (C), so that you get a higher armhole.

Draw the singlet based on the measurements you entered. Use a ruler to get straight lines in the middle of the front and side. All corners should be at a 90 degree angle, so that you avoid hanging corners on the sides and get a smooth transition along the top and bottom edges when cutting against boards.

This pattern piece is both the front piece and the back piece of the singlet. Cut both pieces on a board and make a cover with the same length as the cover for the suspender trousers. Follow the instructions for the suspender to sew the pieces together.

For V-necks, measure how deep you want the neckline to be and draw a slanting line down towards the center front edge of the pattern.

Good luck! Feel free to share the result on Instagram under #brittdungarees and #melilotpatterns <3
