The Split pocket is a quick and easy way of adding a pocket to any pattern or garment. The illustrations show the pattern for Marte coat as an example.
1. Cut two identical square pieces that measure at least 20 x 20 cm (four pieces if you want two pockets).
2. Place one of the squares on the garment with the right sides facing each other, where you want the pocket. Draw a straight line 2 cm below the top edge. Make sure to stop 2 cm from the vertical edge as well.
3. Sew a straight seam around the marked line. The seam should look like a long and narrow horizontal "V". Start to sew with 0.5 cm seam allowance from the marked line, and aim towards the point at the end of the line. Stop with the needle in the fabric at the end of the line and turn the fabric. Continue sewing on the other side and try to end up with a 0.5 cm seam allowance from the line where you started to sew.
4. Cut along the marked line. Stop 1 mm from the seam at the end, to be sure not to cut the seam.
5. Turn the pocket piece through the opening.
6. Press the opening flat with an iron. Be careful not to overwork the fabric with too much heat or pressure.
7. Place the second square on top of the first piece. Match the corners and edges.
8. Sew the pieces together with a straight stitch and 1 cm seam allowance along all edges, except the side with the split.
9. Finish the edges around the pocket with a zigzag seam or a serger.
10. Sew the pocket to the side with a straight seam and 0.5 cm seam allowance.
11. Sew the pocket with as invisible stitches as possible to the inside of the garment by hand, to keep it from flapping around.
Split pocket
The split pocket is a nice detail that is quick and easy to sew. It can be added to any pattern or garment. The illustrations show Marte's coat as an example.
1. Cut out two equal square pieces measuring at least 20 x 20 cm (you need four pieces if you want two pockets).
2. Place one piece on top of the garment, right sides together, where you want the pocket. Draw a straight line 2 cm below the top edge of the pocket. Stop 2 cm from the edge at the end as well.
3. Sew a straight stitch around the line you have drawn. The seam should look like a long and narrow horizontal "V". Start sewing with a 0.5 cm seam allowance from the line, and sew inwards towards the end of the line. When you have reached the end of the line, stop with the needle under the fabric, turn the work and sew back again. Try to end up with a 0.5 cm seam allowance on the underside of the line when you reach the edge where you started.
4. Cut along the line. Stop 1mm from the seam at the end so you don't cut the seam.
5. Turn the pocket piece through the opening.
6. Press the opening gently with an iron. Be careful with the heat and don't press too hard, so you avoid impact on the fabric.
7. Place the second square on top of the first. Make sure all edges and corners meet each other.
8. Sew along the edge all around with a straight stitch and a 1 cm seam allowance around all sides, except the side where the split is placed.
9. Cast over along the edge with a zigzag stitch or overlock.
10. Sew the pocket to the side with a straight stitch 0.5 cm from the edge.
11. Sew the pocket by hand on the inside of the garment, to prevent the pocket from flapping around.
